The General Motors Guide Lamp Division M3A1 Grease Gun was a highly effective submachine gun developed by the U.S. during World War II. Designed as a more cost-effective alternative to the Thompson submachine gun, the M3 was officially adopted in 1942. Its nickname, "Grease Gun," comes from its resemblance to a mechanic's tool. Constructed primarily from stamped sheet metal, the M3 was simple, rugged, and inexpensive to produce, costing only about $15–$20 per unit compared to the Thompson's higher price tag. The M3 fired .45 ACP rounds from a detachable 30-round box magazine and had a relatively slow rate of fire, which helped improve accuracy and conserve ammunition.
