The Sten Mk II is one of the most recognizable Allied submachine guns of World War II. Designed in 1940 after the loss of large quantities of equipment during the Dunkirk evacuation, the Sten was engineered to be an extremely simple and inexpensive firearm that could be produced quickly in large numbers. The Mk II became the most common version of the design, featuring a tubular receiver, a side-mounted 32-round magazine chambered in 9×19mm, and a detachable barrel for compact storage. Manufactured by numerous British factories and subcontractors, the gun could be built with minimal machining, making it ideal for wartime mass production and even clandestine manufacture for resistance groups across occupied Europe.

A British Sten Mk II classified as a “pre-May dealer sample” refers to a machine gun that was imported into the United States prior to May 19, 1986, the effective date of the Hughes Amendment to the Firearm Owners' Protection Act of 1986. These pre-May samples are distinct from transferable machine guns but are still desirable among licensed dealers because they may be owned by a Federal Firearms Licensee with a Special Occupational Tax (SOT) without the need for a law-enforcement demonstration letter. Many of the Sten Mk II guns in this category were imported surplus from British or Commonwealth stocks during the 1960s–1980s. As a result, a British pre-sample Sten Mk II often represents an authentic wartime firearm with historical military provenance, while still occupying a regulatory niche that allows licensed dealers to own and retain them under certain conditions.
