La France Specialties M16K 5.56mm Transferable Machine Gun

This Chester County Armory listing is for a rare, original, La France Specialties M16K 5.56mm transferable select-fire machine gun. Designed and created by Tim La France in the early 1980's, the M16K was one of the first weapons to introduce the power of a full size rifle cartridge into a small, compact, more manuverable package that would be suitable for tighter quarters such as in-and-out of vehicles and inside structures. This was one of the first designs that led to today's modern PDW stylings. Using a standard M16 lower, La France's M16K features an 8 1/8" barrel with a modified, adjustable gas system (patented by Tim La France) that is designed to keep the rate of fire at about 650 rounds per minute (the same as a full size M16 rifle). His ingenious gas-operated blowback design runs flawlessly, and was a huge upgrade in reliability based on other similiar designs of the time regarding shorter barrels in higher caliber weapons, and, to this day, remains one of the most reliable formats in a short barreled AR15/M16 family of weapons. The M16k also features a quick action, ghost ring style front sight that was added by La France on the front of the carry handle to compensate for removal of the front sight gas block assembly. What he ended up creating was a very fast, very reliable weapon platform for its size. Since it was developed in 1982, very few of these were produced in time to be fully NFA registered prior to 1986, making them a rare and collectible addition to the M16 family of weapons. This particular model is in both excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, with almost no noticeable handling or storage markings in the parkerization. With the exception of a small mark on the left side of the collapsible stock, the original finish looks like it just rolled out of the La France factory in San Diego, CA.
