The General Motors Guide Lamp Division M3 Grease Gun was a highly effective submachine gun developed by the U.S. during World War II. Designed as a more cost-effective alternative to the Thompson submachine gun, the M3 was officially adopted in 1942. Its nickname, "Grease Gun," comes from its resemblance to a mechanic's tool. Constructed primarily from stamped sheet metal, the M3 was simple, rugged, and inexpensive to produce, costing only about $15–$20 per unit compared to the Thompson's higher price tag. The M3 fired .45 ACP rounds from a detachable 30-round box magazine and had a relatively slow rate of fire, which helped improve accuracy and conserve ammunition. 

A Guide Lamp M3 Grease Gun marked "U.S. PROPERTY" indicates that the firearm was manufactured under a U.S. government contract for military use. The M3 Grease Gun was primarily issued to American forces during World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War.
