The Armalite AR-18 is a significant yet often overlooked milestone in the history of modern firearms. Developed in the 1960s by Armalite, this gas-operated, selective-fire rifle was designed as a more affordable and simpler alternative to the AR-15. Featuring a stamped steel construction rather than the AR-15's more expensive forged aluminum, the AR-18 was intended to be easier to manufacture in countries without advanced production capabilities. It utilized a short-stroke gas piston system, which contributed to its reliability under adverse conditions. Despite its innovative design, the AR-18 did not see widespread adoption, largely due to the dominance of the AR-15 and other contemporary rifles. However, its influence is evident in many modern assault rifles, as its design elements were adopted by numerous subsequent firearms. The AR-18's legacy lives on through its contributions to the development of modular and adaptable rifle platforms used worldwide today.
