This M78 is in good condition, the bore is a little dirty but no rust or pitting and a visible rifling. The action is smooth and works properly. The varnish on the stock appears to be bubbled from a harsh cleaner or possibly high heat.
The Vetterli rifle system was the most advanced European military rifle of its time and saw steady upgrades from the M69, M71 to this M78 and a design service life of 1869-1890.
